HOCKEYGURU'S FIRST BLOG AND CANADIAN PREVIEW

I just wanna take a quick 1st half look at all the Canadian NHL teams. While there were a few who didn't make any major changes there were a couple that made some big ones. We'll start with Vancouver and work our way East.

Vancouver: The Canucks finished last season with a 49-26-7 record. Although failing to make any impact in the playoffs Roberto Luongo remained solid and Markus Naslund faced a horrible mid-season slump. The Canucks will look to improve on last seasons performance. Some notable additions were D Arron Miller and F Brad Isbister. I see the Canucks basically having the same season as last year. Unfortunately they will fold in the playoffs.

My Placing: 3rd in West

Edmonton Oilers: Poor, Poor Edmonton! To say Chris Pronger did a number to this team is an under-statement. The lowly Oilers finished with a dismal 32-43-7 record. While Edmonton was .500 at home to the very loud and boisterous Rexall Place there away record was astronomically bad. The Oilers lost there leaders in Ryan Smyth and Captain Jason Smith. Both to trades, but they got there #1 guy it seems in Joni Pitkanen. The Oilers have been trying to pry this guy away from Philly for a few season and finally landed the fiesty d-man. There most notable acquisition is Sheldon Souray his 26 goal performance from last season should help the Oilers on there back end. They may squeak in. But I don't see it happening.

My Placing: 11th in the West.

Calgary Flames: CAN'T SCORE GOALS!! Instead of trying to remedy this the Flames got D-men to try and stop the other teams from scoring. While I don't see Adrian Aucoin being much of a help or any better than Hamrlik. I do feel he is better defensively. The Flames finished 43-29-10 last season. With Mikka Kipprusoff and Iginla being the main reason for that. I feel they could be a little better physically with the edition of Owen Nolan but he will need to stay healthy something he hasn't been able to do lately in his career. Mikka Kipprusoff will once again have to stand on his head.

My Placing: 6th in West

Montreal Canadiens: Great speed! Great Captain....... Thats where it about ends for Montreal. Cristobel Huet was not even close to the goalie he was the year before and really needs to show that he can be. They lost there second highest scorer Sheldon Souray to Edmonton...... Wait a minute theres obviously something wrong with your team when your second best scorer is a Defenceman. The Habs did nothing major and lost 3 of there best defensive players from last season in Johnson, Souray, Bonk. They will once again struggle to make the playoffs and may not make them at all. The Canadiens finished with a 42-34-6 record. There most notable addition this offseason. Roman Hamrlik is no where near the offensive talent of Souray. They also signed Brian Smolinski for his defensive skills.

My Placing: 9th in the East

Ottawa: The Senators were a hair away from Lord Stanley's mug but faltered in the end. They didn't do much but lose some of the key pieces in last years run. The Sens finished with a 48-25-9 record keeping them up at the top of the pack. This year will be a different storey as they may finish lower than last year with losses of Tom Preissing arguably there best Dman. They also lost Peter Schaefer in a trade which I think is just ridiculous. Shean Donovan is in know way worth the skill Schaefer brings to your team. There most notable addtions were D Luke Richardson and Shean Donovan.

My Placing: 5th in the East.

Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs finished the season with a 40-31-11 record. Laughable for a team where fans expect more. A lot of people have been constantly screaming for JFJ's head but it has gotten them anywhere as upper management feel they wanna give him one more shot. The leafs have gotten drastically better in a number of areas including goal and foward. Jason Blake looking to add to his 40 goal total of last season should be formidable with Mats Sundin as his center. Kyle Wellwood will take over the second line center spot and should play well with Ponikarovsky and Bell as his wingers. Speaking of Mark Bell alot of people feel his off ice turmoils will distract his play. Well this blogger can tell you that this is as far from the truth as possible, he will easily play on the 1st or second line and I have him slated for 25 goals. Vesa Toskala has obviously become the Leafs new #1 and won't take the position lightly he will do what Raycroft could not last season and that is steal some games. While I see the Leafs being a fromicable opponent this year they may have injury problems. But if the stay healthy they may dominate the North East.

My Placing: 3rd in the East.

Anyways this is my 1st blog feel free to email me at vegeta2659@hotmail.com if you have any Canadian team related questions.

RUNNING THE GAUNTLET

In preparation for the upcoming Canada-Russia junior series Brent Sutter coach of the canadian team ran a drill called the gauntlet what it is is you line the whole team from one icing line to the other about 3-feet apart and get one of your players skate straight and the players who are lined up have to try to hit you and the person skating through has to try to avoid all the hits!

CANADA-RUSSIA JUNIOR SERIES UPDATE

CANADA'S LINES TO WATCH

Forwards

David Perron-Kyle Turris-John Tavares
Milan Lucic-Sam Gagner-Claude Giroux

Defense

Keaton Ellerby-Drew Doughty
Tomas Hickey-Luke Schenn
Karl Alzner-Logan Pyett(said to be TOP 10 in the 07-08 NHL ENTRY DRAFT!)

Goalie

Jonathan Bernier

There should be a couple more of these CANADA-RUSSIA JUNIOR SERIES UPDATES including box scores for each game.

I should have a couple evening rumors coming so when I get them ill be sure to post them!

GIGUERE TO MISS 2 WEEKS IN 07-08 SEASON

Following J.S. Giguere hernia surgery the doctors have told Giguere that it will be a 2 month healing process and that he should be able to get in the net about 2 weeks through the season.
Thus putting an end to the Bryzgalov trade rumors and they could possibly be looking for another goalie. I would not be to surprised if Curtis Joseph ended up there but he might not wanna end up in a place like that but you never know they could have tthoughts of trading Bryzgalov after the two weeks if he performs well so they can get something for him a good player or prospect and then you put Joseph as the backup. I should hear more on this in the coming weeks!

THE RATORICH STORY

Personally, I am sick of writing, talking and even thinking about Mike Peca so Ive decided to post an article about myself. I would like to take this opportunity to thank HabsCaps9 for giving me the opportunity to write for his site.

The following article is a descricption of my journey as a Ranger fan in my short 15 year life from my first-hand perspective.

I was born in September of 1991, a first child to my parents. My father is a lifelong, die-hard, former season ticket holder, Islanders fan who grew up 20 minutes away from the Nassau Coliseum, or as I like to call it, the Mausoleum. He saw the glory days of the Islanders in the early 80s, the years of Bossy, Trottier and the hated Potvin. My mother is disinterested in sports and, like many mothers and wives, is puzzled by the obsession the my father and I have regarding sports. Nonetheless, my father quickly trained me to love the game of hockey and....gasp...the Islanders.

In the first 5 years of my life, I was taught all about the Islanders. I loved hockey, a sport that has been my favorite for all of my life. My father has pictures of me sitting on an ice-skating rink wearing an Islanders jersey. I have many-a-time begged him to destroy the photos but he refused and keeps them to remember the days when we shared fandom. I loved hockey and I knew that the Islanders is what hockey is all about. But it was in my nature to differ from my father in sports teams, myself being a Jets, Yankees and Rangers fan; he, a (football) Giants, Dodgers and Islanders fan. Something would change.

I was put in a situation where I was able to see the light and become a Rangers fan, much to the disappointment of my father. I was two years old when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup in the spring of 1994. My father made a decision to wake me up from my peaceful slumber to watch the final minutes of Game 7 of the Cup Finals because after all, it was a New York team, albeit the hated Rangers. And I saw Craig McTavish win the faceoff with less than 2 seconds to go. And I saw Messier take the Cup with that insane grin pasted on his face.

Although I have no recollection of that night, I am sure that it subconciously sent me on my way to becoming a Rangers fan.

Location also played a role in my journey. You see, I was born and raised in Manhattan, or as it is more commonly known: New York, New York. I live just a fifteen minute train ride from Madison Square Garden, home of my beloved Rangers. And so, the first hockey game that I attended was in that great building as a five year old kid. I only went to Islanders games, but living much closer to the Garden than to the Island, it only made sense to go to the world's most famous arena to watch them. I was confused by the anti-Islander atmosphere and was pulled along by the crowd to cheer for the Rangers. My five year old brain could not think of anything to do but cheer for both teams, to go along with my father and with the other 15,000 fans in the building.

As I grew older, when I was seven or eight, I realized that I could not cheer for both teams or for the Penguins, my adopted team that I enjoyed watching. I had to choose a team to become a real fan. Until then, hockey was a game, fun to watch, fun to play. But when it became a war where fans were emotionally invested in a team, and lived and died with every win and loss, I could not remain sitting on the fence. What really swung my decision was when I found out that a couple of my fathers friends had Rangers season skybox tickets. So when a seven year old kid approached them and asked for two tickets to a game, they could not refuse. And that season, I believe it was the 1998-99 season, I went to my first Ranger game in which the Islanders or Penguins were not playing.

And the Garden atmosphere along with Leetch, Richter and Gretzky made my decision for me. I would be a Ranger fan.

The interesting part is that all the fifteen or so Ranger games I went to before the lockout all ended in ties or losses with the exception of a Rangers-Leafs game which I left after the second period. I had seen the Rangers shutout twice at the hands of Dom Hasek and the Sabres as well as countless ties with the Isles and Pens. So when I heard that the lockout ended in the summer of 2005, I decided to get to as many Ranger games as possible. After watching two losses in 2005-06, I was desperate to see a legitimate Ranger win. I managed to secure tickets to only 3 games this past season thanks to my rigorous private high school schedule of 8AM to 9PM on weekdays and 8AM to 3PM on Sundays. After seeing the Rangers lose to Philly early in the year and blow a 3 goal lead against the Wings, I was ready for another disappointment as they trailed the Islanders 1-0 heading into the third period. DiPietro stopped over 50 shots in the game, much to the delight of my father who came to the game with me. But 27 seconds into the third, DiPietro made a kick save on a Cullen shot and I watched from a perfect angle as Prucha fired the rebound past the sprawling goalie to tie it up. And when Cullen (I'll miss you) scored the only goal in shootout, I sang "Sweet Caroline" as my father watched with a smile on his face. Because he knew that it was a first for me and he knows that there are bigger things in life than hockey.

So now I have built on my hockey fandom, brainwashing my four year old brother into being a Ranger fan despite my father's futile attempts to make him an Isles fan. So all is good with me as I prepare for a Rangers cup run. And I am ready to watch, listen and breathe Rangers hockey in 2007-08. Hope to see you all along the way.

MARKOV IN OTTAWA?

Markov in Ottawa? let me guess your thinking HuH never saw that coming ? anyway i heard that they are in the sweepstakes now with Boston,Islanders and Buffalo!

Also a Czech website reported that Milan Michalek had signed with the San Jose Sharks thats not true but apparently they are close to a deal. This could effect the Marleau sweepstakes Montreal is the most likely destination if he gets traded(i know you have all heard this before sorry) Ottawa has some interest but they dont have the players. Watch out for Ottawa they could go after Forsberg hard!!!

BERARD AND THRASHERS CLOSE

I KEEP HEARING THAT BERARD HAS BEEN IN TALKS WITH THE ATLANTA THRASHERS AND THAT A DEAL IS CLOSE AND THAT IT COULD BE ANOUNCED ANY TIME THIS WEEK!!! ANYWAY ILL STAY ON IT GUYS!!!

CANUCKLAND SITUATION

Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis has about 5 or 6million left to spend he has said that he would like to add some depth at defence or a top-6 forward it will be interesting to see but for now it looks like hes gonna play the Gainey Waiting game and see whats left i could see them making a pitch for Forsberg or of course going the trade route the rumors swirling include Ohlund moving to possibly NJ Devils for Elias or Lightning for St Louis. St Louis is VERY UNLIKELY or as Eklund would he an E1

NIEDERMAYER AND SELANNE DECISIONS

Scott Niedermayer and Teemu selanne will have decided as of next week if they have decided to retire if just niedermayer retires then that frees up 6.25 million dollars in cap space and they would be able to sign Teemu for 6.5 or so so we will see when it all pans out!

PECA PICKS THE BLUE JACKETS

If most of the rumors are true about Michael Peca was going to sign with Rangers ,then leafs, then Rangers again and then the Columbus Blue Jackets came into the picture and guess who he picked thats right THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS the deal should be completely done later week due to Peca passing a physical.According to sportsnet.ca it is a one-year deal. And thats the end of the saga that was THE PECA SITUATION!

LEAFS TALK TO FORSBERG!

John Ferguson Junior made a short appearance on THE BILL WATERS SHOW today and has said he has discussed Forsberg in Toronto! More to come in the following days on the leafs and Forsberg!

PECA TO SIGN WITH BLUE JACKETS

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that the Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran center Michael Peca, pending finalization.

Here is the article from The Dispatch:

Unrestricted free-agent center Michael Peca has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets.

Peca, reached last night, said he was done waiting on the New York Rangers, his first choice, and looking forward to being a Blue Jacket.

“We had a deal in place with the Rangers for almost three weeks now,” Peca said. “It just doesn’t seem like the commitment has been there from the general manager (Glen Sather) to get it done.

“But ever since we started talking with Columbus (Friday), (Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson) has been very straightforward and very interested in getting something done. And so right now, that’s where our focus is, getting something done with Columbus.

“I moved on (from the Rangers). And now I’m getting pretty excited to play for coach Ken Hitchcock and the Blue Jackets.”
Peca, 33, is one of the NHL’s premier defensive forwards.

Neither Howson nor Peca's agent, Don Meehan, returned messages.

Peca is a veteran of 728 NHL games and a two-time winner of the Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward.

He has also served as captain of two clubs, the Buffalo Sabres (1997-2000) and New York Islanders (2001-2005), and could well serve as one of the Blue Jackets’ alternate captains under captain Adam Foote.

Peca spent last season with Toronto, playing only 35 games before he was submarined by Chicago defenseman Jim Vandermeer. Peca suffered a broken tibia that sidelined him the rest of the season. He finished with four goals and 11 assists.

Earlier this summer, he told the New York Daily News that he had completely recovered from the broken leg, and he passed a physical with the Rangers last week.

“It’s not about the money for me right now,” Peca said. “I played so few games last year, I’m just excited to get back on the ice and prove myself all over again.

“I know a few guys in that room and I think we can be a pretty good team. I know Adam Foote and Rick Nash. I lived in Jason Chimera’s house when I played in Edmonton (2005-06). I’m good friends with Todd Marchant, and when I talked to him, he told me it was a great place to play.”

It’s unclear exactly where Peca will fit in the Blue Jackets lineup, but he will draw major minutes under Hitchcock, who has raved about Peca’s work ethic and on-ice attitude.

Peca has long been regarded as one of the top penalty killers in the NHL, and with Sergei Fedorov and Manny Malhotra, he gives the Blue Jackets three solid defensive centers, as well as three players who excel at winning faceoffs.

MARK RATORICH'S FIRST POST

For my first blog on this site, Im going to bring up some points about Michael Peca

The Rangers Standpoint:

Peca did not recieve an offer from the Rangers, despite having been given a physical by the team and having an interview with Rangers head coach Tom Renney. Although the Rangers could have signed him for under 1.3 million, leaving them at the cap with the dropping of Kasparitis, they refused to even give him an offer. Rangers GM Glen Sather probably realized that Peca would not be needed with the many young prospects, Dubinsky, Dawes, Ansimov that may be NHL ready. As a backup plan, if the youngsters arent ready, Hossa xan play on the first line, leaving Straka, Drury or Avery available to fill the #rd line center spot. Signing him would also create issues for deals at the deadline and signing free agents nextJanuary.

Peca's Future
Peca is now likely to sign with the Blue Jackets who, after unexpectedly losing Svitov to Russia, are short a center and have made a bid to sign him. However, Meehan did state that he had offers from two teams, leaving one unknown team that has put out an offer for Peca. By analyzing the teams, I would like to speculate that this unknown team, if it indeed exists, would be San Jose. I have spoken to fans who have said he would be needed and if the two sides come to an agreement, Peca may want to sign with the early Western Conference favorites as opposed to the cellar-dweller Blue Jackets. In any event, it should take a while until Peca is signed but I will be keeping an eye out for him.

Until next time,
